Product Description
The Explorer 4000 is packed with features normally found only on more expensive backpacks. A full length adjustable torso allows this pack to be adjusted for those 5'1" all the way up to 6'4". The padded back and airflow system provides padding in the perfect spots while allowing substantial airflow to prevent your back from getting too hot. Its contoured shoulder, lumbar, and hip pads help ensure a comfortable trip. The Explorer4000 also features a padded water bladder pocket for your favorite water bladder up to 3 liters in size. Side zippered pockets, mesh pockets, and a top zippered pocket provide plenty of room for smaller accessories. There's even two spots for walking sticks. A top-loading main compartment and a sleeping bag compartment complete the pack. Includes bright yellow attached rain fly and is hydration system ready.

4 out of 5 stars Backpack served its purpose   August 29, 2010

I just came back from my 12 day trip. The bag was sturdy and has many pockets. If you are looking for a pack with greater space in the main pocket, it may be slightly short, but overall it is very convenient. The rain cover was very useful. The bag adjustments made the bag pretty comfortable to carry. I would recommended this bag.

5 out of 5 stars Great value when on sale. Performs great.   August 29, 2010

I used this backpack on a 7 day, 6 night backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains and it performed very well. With about 40 pounds (I over packed a bit!), the pack did a great job of holding all my gear. I liked the external pockets and the fact that the torso length is adjustable. I'm 6' tall and weigh 180 pounds, waist is about 33-34 inches. The pack fit great but take some time to make sure the waist strap fits snugly around your waist as this will distribute the weight off your shoulders. Also adjust the shoulder straps so they are snug. All the zippers were easy to open/close with the exception of the sleeping bag compartment which was a little bit of a struggle at times. The pack itself weighs 5 pounds and I did find myself wondering if I should have purchased a lighter, but more expensive pack. I also was wishing the shoulder straps had more padding as my shoulders were hurting at times.

Overall I can't complain too much about this pack and will most likely use this pack again for next year's hike. If you can get this pack on sale for around sixty bucks then I would highly recommend this pack. For that price it truly is a bargain and performs great.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for primitive camping and hiking trips....   August 19, 2010

I was hesitant to purchase this online without trying it on, but I couldn't pass up the price so I did. I'm 5'5 and 120# and I had to adjust the belt and straps as tight as they could go, but this pack fits perfectly! It distributes the weight of the load perfectly and is quite comfortable. Thick sleeping bags may not fit into the designated spot, but then you can always put it in the main compartment...problem solved, but your summer bag should fit fine. I can think of nothing negative to say about it. I haven't had it long, so I cannot comment on longterm durability, but it has held up fine with several camping/hiking trips (not to mention my 2 and 4 year olds constantly playing with the zippers)!

4 out of 5 stars this thing is huge.   August 16, 2010

nice, big pack. plastic parts and zippers look a little cheap, but the fabric seems sturdy. good lumbar support.

4 out of 5 stars Great bag for 6' + hikers!   August 7, 2010

I'm 6'2" and tried this bag after having difficulty with the Fox 75 + 10. It's an excellent bag for the price and fits a lot better (longer torso) than the Fox 75. It's a bit smaller and may require more thoughtful (or creative) packing but, as I learned, comfort is paramount if you're going 12 miles in the back country.

The features on the pack are well designed, and the build is the same excellent quality of the Fox 75. Teton puts a lot of thought into their designs and it shows. My only suggestion would be to remove the ice-axe loops on the bottom and replace them with buckle straps for a sleeping bag or tent.

Overall, I like this pack a lot and would highly recommend it.
